Gender representations in Disney

Commonly seen disney stereotypes

Change for your man
  • Ariel starts out in the little mermaid as a good representation of women
  • She is strong willed, curious, talented, brave and adventurous.
  • She even saves Prince Eric from drowning
  • She changes her whole personality once she becomes infatuated with prince eric
  • She trades her tail for legs, already drastically changing herself physically for him.
  • She becomes quite and submissive and all she wants is for Eric to like her.
  • He seems to like the quiet changed version of her.
  • She leaves her family and her friends and her old life to go and live with Eric.

Representations of men
  • Snow white represents that men are useless around the house
  • They cannot do basic house tasks and need a woman to do it for them.
  • Snow White has to do everything for the dwarfs conveying that they are incompetent.

Beauty and happiness
  • Your beauty is the only thing that makes you special
  • Literally Cinderella turns up to the ball looking beautiful and dolled up
  • The Prince falls for her beauty not her
  • They live happily ever after.
  • Literally the message conveyed her is beauty equals happiness
  • The same thing applies in Sleeping Beauty
  • Prince Eric falls for Aurora because he thinks she is beautiful
  • They don’t get to know each other but they suddenly decide that they will be married because they like the look of each other.

Being fat and angry is related
  • It is a recurring theme that being big of fat makes you moody and angry while being thin and petite makes you kind and gentle
  • For example Belle and the Beast in beauty and the beast
  • Also ursula and Ariel
