Lighting for film noir

One very important aspect of film noir is the aspect of lighting. I have written some basic lighting cues in my shot list but I want to explore the idea of lighting in film noir in more detail so we can really accentuate the style in our film

One common aspect of film noir is a background that is out of focus. There is a sharp focus on the main character or object of the shot/scene but the background becomes a blur of unimportance. It can also add a creepy unnerving feel to a scene. Venetian blinds are another common aspect of film noir

Shadowy figures and silhouette shots are another common aspect of film nori. This is something that our group will use a lot, sharp shadows.

Lighting from the side often gives the shots more dimension

The stylistic devices of a film nior's lighting really create that moody dramatic look. If your going to have dimension or pattern use venison blinds, if your going to have shadows sharpen them if your filming a woman's face light up their eyes.
