Stereotypes in a range of music videos alike to blurred lines and Robin Thicke

How deep is your love

- All women depicted in this video clip are perfect looking
- Gigi is also the depiction of an ideal woman.
- Everyone is depicted as loving to party and enjoying the party they are at its all anyone seems to care about.
- In many of the scenes she is seen wearing revealing clothing (a backless black dress, a high cut midriff lace top, a bikini, underwear and bra as hospital wear. Everyone around her wears the same thing. She also jumps into a pool in a while dress and comes out with it clinging to her.

Blame
- the whole video is literally just women in tight clothes and people partying
- It begins with four women in tight fitted outfits walking down the road
- John newman in this isn't sexualised at all, he is fully clothed
- Many of the women lying next to him on the bed are fully clothed.
- They are objectified objects of sex in this video
- Many of the women are in lingerie
- everyone is lining up for a club people just want to party

Marylin Monroe
- Pharrell williams is fully dressed in a costume that does not sexualise him in the slightest.
- The women around him are dressed in very tight leatords
- The cameras frequently focus on the women physical assets (their boobs bums and legs) objectifing and sexualising them
- Pharrel dances around with the women

24 carrot
- Bruno Mar's music video is all about his wealth
- Bruno Mars isn't sexualised he is fully clothed
- All the women in the video are scantily clad and wearing barely anything
- Everyone is into the party lifestyle and cares about nothing but partying
- There are many close up shots of women assets on their body.

Planning

Why are videos banned?

- Music videos are banned if they are considered too extreme in anyway
- Many artists will receive a ban on television and sometimes youtube if their video is considered too sexual, too violent, too political etc.
- Some artists though are highly controversial for a reason, whether it be to garner media attention, make a statement or artistically express their mental state they amy release a music video despair the huge controversy that surrounds it.

MIA born free
- Some artists in their music videos are highly controversial in order to express a certain political message or a message they believe to be relevant to the public.
- MIA grew up in Sri Lanka and witnessed lots of atrocities, attempted genocide and mass killings in her time there.
- She is also passionate about the fact that atrocities happen everyday but they were swept under the rug as if they never existed in the first place.
- MIA wanted to depict a real event that happens but made into something fake to give people perspective on the horrors going on in our world.
- MIA had a lot of control over the whole project writing the whole music video out herself and without telling her record company.
- The controversial French director Romain Gavras was hired to be the director of the video.
- the video positions us to see red heads as a minority group that is clearly being blamed for the societies problems (or perhaps it is because they are different) as a result they are rounded up on a bus and taken to be exterminated.
- The audience is positioned to see them as victims of genocide, reminiscent of the jewish in the holocaust or atrocities in Sri Lanka.
- The idea that they play the victims of mass atrocities is also emphasised by the fact that there is a poster in the street of red heads with the claim "our day will come" beneath it.
- Non red headed guards imitate and are presented like the leaders and authorities in many atrocities, they are presented as the predators of the minorities, senselessly killing them.

- Censorship was taken on this video and it was taken down due to the fact it was claimed to be too violent.
- The video clip features a red head being blown up, a young boy with his brains blown out and another getting violently beaten
- This infers the extreme violence against all the red heads.
- It was also censored because people believed it "hit to close to home"and was almost too real and too confronting for people to watch due to the representations of the red heads as a minority group in a genocide and comments on the absurdity of genocide

- Despite its censoring and many people believing the video was too much, it was well critically acclaimed because of the representations presented in the video
- Many appreciated the accurate portrayals of military violence, brutality and force.

- As her own institution MIA was angered by the censoring of her message and the fact that people reacted with so much sadness and anger towards her video but barely aknowledged the real events it was based off.
- Her director claims "How can you be shocked by the M.I.A. video and not shocked when Israel bombs Gazafor days and days...Really crazy stuff where people actually die, real things."

Blurred lines
- The blurred lines music video is intentionally controversial due to the insitutions of Robin Thicke, Pharrell williams, the prodcers of the song, their record companies and the director of the video wanting to garner as much attention, hype and controversy around the video.
- It was a banned video due to the fact it had strong themes of rape culture throughout the video
- It was also highly degrading to women
- They did this by harnessing specific representations of the people in the video and using highly controversial lyrics as a backdrop for the action.
- One of the main aspects of this video that causes extreme amounts of controversy are the lyrics. They depict rape culture claiming that it is okay to blur the lines between consential sex and rape if the woman seems like she wants it.
- As part of an institution Robin thick copped a lot of flack for the song. He attempted to rebuttal this in serval interviews.
- he claimed that because he was married with children he was the perfect person to sing a song about this.
- As another part of the institution Pharrel williams attempted to calm the controversy stating  "I know you want it wasn't meant to be sexually suggestive but rather suggest that even good girls have bad thoughts."
- This dress of the controversy did little to quell public outrage.
- the outrage was also fuelled by the representations of the video
- In the video the men are represented as "player" like characters who girls are attracted to, they are not however displayed as objects of sex, being fully clothed.
- Fully naked women prance around them, lighting cigarettes for the men, inferring acts of bastiality, being aided by the men to take drugs while the men whisper  "I know you want it" in their ear.
- The women are simply objects of sex in the video contrasting the men by being fully naked.
- As part of the institutions williams thick and the director Diane Martel had a lot of control over the controversy in the film clip
- Thicke spoke out about the film clips controversy in an interview explaining how as an institution they chose to be extremely controversial  for the publicity and hype around the video. They wanted the song to be huge.  "we tried to do everything that was taboo bestiality, drug injections, everything that was derogitory towards women."
- He then went on to claim that he was actually a good person and never had degrading women before which unfortunately didn't help his reputation.
- he stated "What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. Ive always respected women. "

Born to die
- As a major part of her institution Lana del rey has always displayed a highly glorified morbid disposition to the public which likely stems from the fact that she claims to suffer from several severe mental illnesses
- Although it may not be intentional Lana del rey's glorification of sadness, suicide and dying young and beautiful has become a large part of her brand.
- The representations in her music videos highly reflect this.
- she claims to use her music and art as a means to express her sadness and depressive mindsets.
- One of the most prominent examples of her self destructive mindset occurs in her music video Born To Die.
- The film clip was banned from television due to the fact that it glorified suicide.
- The morbid music video is also coupled by depressive lyrics "choose your last words this is the last time. Cause you and I we were born to die."
- Lana del rey has always been known to idolise tragic stars such as Amyy winehouse, Kurt Cobain and Marilyn Monroe.
- Lana del rey is portrayed as extremely sad and the video features many clips of her sitting in rich ad luscious borders staring sadly at the floor, morbidly singing to the camera in great french cathedrals surrounded by white tigers in lush beautiful clothes or else lying with her tattooed clad boyfriend in beautifully furnished rooms.
- These clips create the representation of Lana in her prime, currently she is beautiful, she is wealthy, she is surrounded by fame and money and men yet it is deliciously tragic that among all the lushness that she is depressed.
- these rich shots are juxtaposed with her and her man in their dark car screaming down the highway. the representation of their deliciously tragic and imminent suicide is created here and highly glorified through the way they look away from the road and kiss each other passionately driving to their death. the video ends with the man carrying Lana's bloodied body from his car
- The representation Lana is trying to create is that it is a beautiful thing to die  young beautiful and wealthy,
- her self expression of her depression

Born to die music video

- There was some controversy surrounding this video due to the fact that it glorified suicide and dying young

Why is she trying to be controversial?
- Lana del rey says herself she is severely depressed and likes to often express her mindsets in her art
“It’s hard for me sometimes to think about going on when I know we’re going to die."
- She claimed her panic attacks have gotten significantly worse throughout the years.
- her idols are abby Wine house and kurt cobain
- She claims to wish she was dead already
"I do!" she exclaims. "I don't want to have to keep doing this but I am." When the interviewer prompts Lana to explain what she means by "doing this," she elaborates, "Everything. That's just how I feel. If it wasn't that way then I wouldn't say it."
- She often includes very morbid lyrics in her songs like "Your soul is calling me telling me that everything is fine. But I wish I was dead."
- And in this song "Choose your last words this is the last time. Cause you and I. We were born to die"

How much control does she have over the video?
- Lana del rey is a self professed creative person she would have had a sigificant amount of influence
- Escpecially considering the dark themes of the video it seems Lana would have a big impact on what occurred during the process.

Who directed the video?
- Yoann Lemione
- he is a French music video director
- he has worked with many other famous people including katy perry

What about it did people like?
- They loved that it was directed in France and featured beautiful decor and artwork
- Many of the other aesthetics, old fashioned cars, contrast in tattoos and flawless skin, her vignette boudoir, flower crowns etc...

What didn't people like?
- People didn't like the way Lana was seemingly glorifying dying young just because you can or through suicide
- She made suicide look like something beautiful and desirable when really it is a hideous tragedy for everyone around you
- The video features Lana and her man doing a series of reckless things while driving and ends with her and him kissing while he drives so they are both unaware of the driving in an attempt to kill them both.
- The video ends with him carrying Lana's lifeless and bodied corpse away from the flaming car yet he is still alive.

Time to talk about the Blurred lines music video

- Its pretty damn obvious why this video is controversial
- it features three men singing a song about "blurred lines" between conceptual sex and rape
- They sing about the idea that it is okay to rape a girl if she seems to "want the sex" but is still saying no. umm no. I have so many problems with this song
- The thing about this video is the girls are almost completely naked (and I think in one version they are completely naked) while the men are fully clothed and the girls are literally dancing around the men while they admire them. they are not people they are objects of sex.
- This music video and song is literally cancer to our society. (can I say that on my FTV blog?)
- Heres the thing though. Its fine that those girls chose to do the video. if they were fine with it great! more power to them, if they feel comfortable showing their bodies great! no problems there. The problem lies in the message of the video and the fact that they are endorsing the message by being in the video.

Why are these people trying to be controversial?
- The track shows women prancing around in nothing but thongs while the fully dressed singers whisper I know you want it in their ears

How much control do they have over the video
- thicke had a lot of control over the video claiming "we tried to do everything that was taboo bestiality, drug injections, everything that was derogitory towards women."
- He then went on to say "What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. Ive always respected women. " Well bloody good on you robin.
- he also claimed that cause he was married with children and settled in his personal life he was the perfect guy to make this. NO IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE AT ALL

Who directed the video
- Diane Martel directed it and came up with the idea of using nude models
- She isn't super controversial and it would seem that most of the control and Ideas came from the artists themselves she just went okay cool.

Who liked it
- Im sure some people did

what did they say about the controversy
- Pharrell williams said the line "I know you want it wasn't meant to be sexually suggestive but rather suggest that even good girls have bad thoughts." Right...

Why are certain music videos banned?

M.I.A Born Free
- This was banned because it was basically a music video about the genocide of red headed people.
- Its pretty graphic, there is a shooting, a red headed person being blown up and two guars beating someone to death
- Its been a highly controversial music video
- there is lots of "shocking" imagery packed into the video
- Like two older overweight adults having sex, an old man smoking crack etc...

Why is she trying to be so controversial
- M.I.A was inspired to make this video to send some sort of message
- She had recently seen extra judicial killing of Tamil Males from the Sri Lanken army often filmed on simple things like mobile phones.
- She wanted to depict something real made fake to kind of give some perspective of horrors that happen in the real world
- She wanted to make a statement on what people pretend isn't actually happening in the real world
- She also grew up in Sri Lanka and saw plenty of genocide
- Its also a comment on the absurdity of genocide

How much control does she have over this
- M.I.A has a lot of control over this as she didn't it without informing her record label
- the music video was written by M.I.A

Who directed the video
- French director Romain Gavras
- he has directed other sorts of controversial music videos
- Gavras claimed after the release "How can you be shocked by the M.I.A. video and not shocked when Israel bombs Gazafor days and days...Really crazy stuff where people actually die, real things."

When did this become so controversial
- It was only on youtube for a day before it was taken down so it was claimed as almost too controversial almost straight away.

Who took it down
- Youtube took it down

Why was it so controversial
- It was claimed to be controversial because of the violent scenes in it
- It "Hit too close to home"
- Some believed it could cause bullying to read headed people

Who liked it
- It was well critically acclaimed due to the videos portray of military force, violence and brutality

So what does this mean for the video?

What does the record label think of this
M.I.A's record labels actually didn't know she was doing this music video

Ariana Grande changes

- Ariana started out as a sweet Broadway kid
- Before that she would perform on cruise ships
- Ariana got a job working on a popular Nickelodeon TV show Victorious playing a sweet and fun loving character who was also a bit thick
- Ariana lost a lot of weight and performed at the iheart radio show in a 60 inspired dress and a completely new hairstyle
- it was reported in the media that her life coach quit because he was tired of her attitude claiming: 'She was so obsessed with her hair that she had it dyed every three days, and the big ponytail is fake.
'She acts like a child and constantly needs people to coddle her.'
- Ariana claims she had a lot of trouble getting away from her Nickelodeon character Cat valentine
“People liked her and they accepted her and they thought that I was like her. So I used to pretend to be a little more like her than I actually was,”
“I was 14 years old and ready to make an R&B album. I was like, ‘Where is that Mary J. Blige collab? Where is that Natasha Bedingfield writing session? Where is my session with India.Arie? I’m ready. Let’s go,’”
“I dyed my hair back to brown. I made out with a rapper in the video. I made the point I wanted to make. And I was excited to do so after so many years of pretending to be somebody else in front of a lot of people.”
- Ariana grande has received a lot of backlash from people saying it is inappropriate for her to be acting more risque as she has a younger fan base garnered from her nickelodeon kids TV show.
- people also assume she is being made to do this and has become a product of the industry
- Ariana retaliated by saying: “I’ve seen people online saying, ‘It’s so sad she’s becoming a product of this industry – she’s wearing shorter and shorter skirts and showing more and more skin’. I’m like, ‘Yeah, because I want to’.
She added: “Believe me, if I don’t want to do something I will not do it, and I say that with every ounce of passion in my body. I’m a very flexible person but if I feel like you want me to compromise my views or myself as an artist, you can go f**k yourself.”

Representations in Ariana's music video "Love me harder"

Representations of Ariana
- Woah big difference in the Ariana of 13 and the one of 14 seriously
- She seems way more grown up in this she isn't cute anymore she's sexy now
- She wears a tight black dress while she seductively strokes her arms and legs and the camera pans around her and around her chest which is now on full display
- her movements are incredibly sexual now she seems to act out the motions of sex, on her own though
- She is now using her body to sell her music

Representations of the Weekend
- He is fully dressed, not so sexual
- Just kinda walking around in a suit
- Standing around
- dancing around a little unisexually and more groovily

representations of people in Ariana grande "The Way"

Ariana
- Still quite cute, not nearly as cutsie as PYHU
- She still isn't sexualised she is wearing a mostly covered dress its pretty on her
- Basically she just looks really pretty and is basically just showing off how pretty she is in this video
- Ariana wears a pink ribbon with her hair, her moves are still quite conservative she is covering her chest a lot of the time
- Her moves are still cute and quite playful, but not quite as cute as PYHU
- Playing with balloons, jumping around, turning around and looking cutely at camera, flicking her hair, lying on the ground playing with her hair and allowing mac to take cute photos of her
- Looks sweetly embarrassment in the songs one mildly provocative line "Your a princess to the public but a freak when its time"

MacMiller
- Completely covered not at all sexualised
- trying to come across as the perfect boyfriend
- trying to represent he is a "cool" wrapper with his hand motions
- His movements are also quite sweet and playful
- Playing with balloons trying to bit balloons taking photos of Ariana

The lyrics are barely provocative its more a nice song about falling in love
What we gotta do right here is go back, back in the town.

I love the way you make me feel
I love it, I love it
I love the way you make me feel
I love it, I love it

Say, I'm thinking 'bout her every second, every hour
Do my singing in the shower
Picking petals off the flowers like
Do she love me, do she love me not? (love me not)
[One version:] I ain't a player, I just crush a lot (crush a lot)
[Another version:] I ain't a player (I just play her, I just play her)

You give me that kind of something
Want it all the time, need it everyday
On a scale of one to ten I'm at a hundred
Never get enough, I can't stay away

If you want it, I got it, I got it everyday
You can get whatever you need from me
Stay by your side, I'll never leave you
And I ain't going nowhere 'cause you're a keeper

So don't you worry, baby, you got me

I got a bad boy, I must admit it (hey)
You got my heart, don't know how you did it (hey)
And I don't care who sees it, babe
I don't wanna hide the way I feel when you're next to me (hey)

I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
I love the way (I love it, I love it)
Baby, I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
Ooh, I love the way (I love it, I love it)
The way you love me

Oh, it's so crazy you get my heart jumping
When you put your lips on mine
And, honey, it ain't a question (q-question)
'Cause, boy, I know just what you like

So If you need it, I got it, I got it everyday
Be your lover, your friend, you'll find it all in me
Stay by your side, I'll never leave you
And I ain't going nowhere 'cause you're a keeper

So don't you worry, baby, you got me

I got a bad boy, I must admit it (hey)
You got my heart, don't know how you did it (hey)
And I don't care who sees it, babe
I don't wanna hide the way I feel when you're next to me (hey)

I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
I love the way (I love it, I love it)
Baby, I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
Ooh, I love the way (I love it, I love it)
The way I love you

Uh, I make you feel so fine, make you feel so fine
I hope you hit me on my celly when I sneak in your mind
You're a princess to the public, but a freak when it's time
Said your bed be feeling lonely,
So you're sleeping in mine.
Come and watch a movie with me,
"American Beauty" or "Bruce Almighty" that's groovy,
Just come and move closer to me
I got some feelings for you,
I'm not gonna get bored of
But, baby, you're an adventure
[One version:] So please let me come explore you
[Another version:] So let me come and explore you

So don't you worry, baby, you got me

I got a bad boy, I must admit it (hey)
You got my heart, don't know how you did it (hey)
And I don't care who sees it, babe
I don't wanna hide the way I feel when you're next to me (hey)

[One version:] I love the way (I love the way)
[Another version:] I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
I love the way (I love it, I love it)
Baby, I love the way (I love the way)
Ooh, I love the way (I love it, I love it)

I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
I love the way (I love it, I love it)
Baby, I love the way (I love the way you make me feel)
Ooh, I love the way (I love it)
The way I love you

The way I love you, (you), you, you, yeah, the way

I love the way you make me feel
I love it, I love it
I love the way you make me feel
I love it
The way I love you.

Representations of people in Ariana grande first music video "Pu your hearts up"

Ariana
- She is portrayed from the beginning as being sugary sweet she starts with freeing a butterfly from a jar and waving goodbye to it
- Walking down the street interacting sweetly to the dancers and people around her
- Ariana isn't sexualised at all she is covered up wearing a long bright pink dress
- Her dancing and movements are all portrayed in a very cutest manner she winks at the camera and blows kisses at it etc
- She often looks cute and surprised
- Ariana is hugged by a few of the dancers
- She then dances in the rain
- She looks confused about the dance moves and gets adorably flustered
- Overall she is portrayed as sugary sweet, cutesy and a little bit dim kinda like her character she played for a long time on her Nickelodeon TV show.
"I feel like 'Put Your Hearts Up' would've been Cat's single," Ariana said, referencing her Sam and Cat character. "I really wanted to do music, but I couldn't wait. So I was stuck in this weird world where it was like 'I'm Cat, but I'm … me.'"

Other character: (Men and women on the street)
- They are also sugary sweet, they are loving and smiling wearing pretty and gentle colours, kissing and dancing
- None of the dancers here are sexualised they are all wearing 50's style clothes

The lyrics in this song are the most sexually unprovocative lyrics that ever did unprovocative very different to her style today
Lemme see you put your hearts up, yeah lemme see you put your hearts up, yeah
If we give a little love, maybe we can change the world
You think you're so small
Like you're itty bitty.
Just one match in the lights of the city
Walking by strangers on the side of the street
Like a quarter in a cup'll get 'em off on their feet, like
You think you're never gonna make your mark
Sit back and watch the world while it falls apart, like
Out of sight out of mind, like, like
It's just a waste of time,
Like, like, like
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
I said
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
Sing it if you with me
All you boys and all you girls
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
Wishing on a shooting star in the sky
We can do anything if we try
Can't resurrect ghandi
Resurrect but
If we put our heads together
We can do anything like
You don't have to be a billionare
You don't have to have
Much too show how much care
Like give a wink
Give a kiss
Like give a little happiness
Like like like
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
I said
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
Sing it if you with me
All you boys and all you girls
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
Don't let em bring you down now, down now
Don't let em bring you down now, down now
And get up and just love now love now
And get up and just love now love now
Don't let em bring you down now, down now
Don't let em bring you down now, down now
And get up and just love now love now
And get up and just love now love now
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
I said
Hey yeah yeah yeah
Hey yeah yeah
Sing it if you with me
All you boys and all you girls
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah
If we give a little love
Maybe we can change the world
Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah

Music video stuff

Music videos
What is the purpose?
Content?
Themes?
Lyrics?

Basic roots for music were to entertain and tell a story, profits were not really involved

Things started changing when they started putting music into film
Musicals
Technological innovation
censorship which relates to history and technological innovation and changes

Silent film+music
Silent film + music —> The Jazz singer
Colours was the next innovation —> The Wizard of Oz
Special FX —> Michael Jackson
History, representation of something historically in time

Pop music wins awards/advertising and marketing
Branding
Elvis Presley changed music by dancing

Representations in music videos
  • gender
  • culture
  • time
  • fashion of the time

Who is the target audience in music videos across genres

Main institutions
  • audience
  • singers
  • record companies
  • radio
  • at times branding

technologies
institutions
audience
representation
language —> Visual language

Sometimes there is censorship in language
In terms of mine en scene censorship some videos have been censored because of their visual language

Mise en scene
Cinematography

Lighting and colours help to create a theme

Miley cyrus in wrecking ball she was all young and innocent and then came back with this crazy video where she was fully naked on a wreckage ball using her tongue

One of the most controversial music videos was a film clip called girls on film
another was madonna in 1987 when she released like a prayer, she used her body to sell stuff and she was selling her body in a catholic church.

Censor ship has changed censorship law cause society itself has changed people are exposed to media which desensitises people. Music videos have helped do this.
